Le deuxième album , va capitaliser ces espoirs en prenant avec une aisance magistrale le virage psychédélique de l'année 67 : des structures toujours aussi simples, un sens du riff quasi magique ("Sunshine of your Love", "Outside woman blues"), des mélodies imparables ("World of pain"), des vocaux aériens ("Dance the night away"). L'album va même donner aux Cream deux singles dans les charts anglais. Clin d'oeil au passé ou hommage : l'album s'ouvre avec "Strange brew", petit bijou "à la Booker T. Jones", ou Clapton sonne comme Steve Cropper ! Un album hors-catégorie, dont chaque groupe de rock rêve de trouver un jour l'alchimie secrète.

Le troisième volet, marque l'arrivée au sommet et l'amorce du déclin. C'est un double album, moitié studio-moitie live, enregistré en 68 dans les deux "temples" de San Francisco (Fillmore et Winterland), où Cream est un des rares groupes non-americains à être programmé. C'est un sommet par la richesse et la variété de ce qu'ils proposent : des blues quasi traditionnels ("Born under a bad sign", "Sitting on the top of the world"), des morceaux de pure pop ("White room", le mystérieux "Pressed rats and warthog", "Passing the time"..), l'irruption de guitare acoustique, basse à l'archet et violoncelle ("As you said") et quelques superbes passages dans les séquences de concert : "Crossroads" et la longue version (près de 17 minutes) du "Spoonful" de Willie Dixon. On passera en revanche sur les 16 minutes de "Toad" et son interminable solo de batterie accusant le poids des ans. C'est l'amorce du déclin, car cette diversité reflétait aussi les divergences des trois egos, que de trop longues tournées, incessantes depuis leurs débuts, poussaient à bout. Et ce fut, de fait, le dernier album officiel.

Trois morceaux en préparation seront finalisés en studio en 1969, "Doing that Scrapyard Thing", "What a Bringdown" et "Badge", co-signé par George Harrison. Ils figurent dans l'album "GOODBYE" avec trois séquences de concert. Ce dernier album, moyen, souffre des mêmes symptomes schizophréniques que "Wheels of Fire", mais présente un des meilleurs titre de Cream sur scène : une version à moitie folle de "I'm so glad" de Skip James. Les deux derniers disques, "LIVE CREAM" et "LIVE CREAM vol 2" sont posthumes. Entièrement approvisionnés par les mêmes concerts californiens de San Francisco (Fillmore et Winterland) et Oakland de mars et octobre 1968 , qui fournirent la matière de "Wheels of Fire". La basse ronflante et motivée (sur "Nsu"par exemple) donne une bonne idee de la puissance que pouvait dégager Jack Bruce sur scène. A la fin du premier live, apparait la curiosité "Lawdy Mama", produit et mis en boite dans un studio new yorkais par Ahmet Ertegun au cours de la tournée : rien moins qu'un remake avec d'autres paroles de "Strange Brew".
